Malin Bång’s The Curious Collection is scored for chamber ensemble and objects – what this means is that each musician has to handle an object in addition to their instrument: The flutist must also play a salt container, the bass clarinetist must play on a mobile phone, and according to the score, the percussionist must also take care of “a book on Gustav Mahler”, etc. … The Swedish composer is quite accurate when she describes her music as “an exploration of unpredictability”!
Jukka Tiensuu’s Ikisyyt is also untraditionally scored, namely for kantele and sinfonietta. Kantele is a Finnish folk instrument with up to 36 strings and with a beautiful bell-like sound. In the Finnish National Epic Kalevala there is a kantele, the strings of which are spun from “the locks of a willing maiden”! Besides being composer, Jukka Tiensuu is a pianist, cembalo player and conductor. His compositions for kantele has contributed to the recent renaissance of the instrument in Finland.
