Ligeti and Ruders meet each other in the secret spaces of music’s architecture. The artists speak to each other with their ruinous voices, macabre apocalyptic visions, absurd beings and percussive attacks on the audience.
Both composers want to write dramatic, image-rich music – and both composers ended quickly their problematic relationship with musical modernism. They are both fundamentally interested in form, expression and instrumentation, and their music can be experienced as an organic extension of classical music.
This means that major and minor are still available as pieces of the musical jigsaw puzzle and it also means that african rhythms, klezmer-music and much more can be recognised in the musical tapestry of forms and figures.
