2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen. More than 600 works have been performed by the ensemble during those two decades. We think that is a cause for celebration. The Athelas New Music Festival this year takes place in the “Teater Republique” on 5-12 June. The theme of this year’s festival is Danish and American music. Danish and foreign ensembles, composers and soloists will demonstrate the great potential of contemporary music as a means to maintain and renew our cultural heritage.
Athelas New Music Festival 2010 offers the opportunity to experience music by Carl Nielsen, Hans Abrahamsen, Per Nørgård, Maja Ratkje, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Thomas Adès, David Lang, Christian Winther Christensen, Karl Aage Rasmussen, Simon Løffler, Nicolai Worsaae, Suzanne Bocanegra, Jeppe Just Christensen, David Lang, Pierre Jodlowski, Annie Gosfield, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg, Bo Lundby Jæger, Terry Riley, Regin Petersen, Ylva Lund, Michael Gordon, David Lang, György Ligeti, Tan Dun, Axel Borup-Jørgensen, Julia Wolfe, Evan Ziporyn, Louis Andriessen, Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, Peter Bruun, Gunnar Berg, Benjamin Yusupov, Sebastian Fagerlund …
The music will be performed by some of the best Danish and foreign ensembles and soloists: Bang on a Can All Stars, The Danish String Quartet featuring Accordeon Player Andreas Borregaard, The Diamond Ensemble, Dygong, Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen, The DR Youth Ensemble, Alpha Trio, Mathias Reumert & Friends, the Accordeon Player Frode Andersen and Sound Magician Ejnar Kanding together with 50 violinists who have never played the violin before, the Figura Ensemble featuring singers Helene Gjerris, Tuva Semmingsen and Signe Asmussen, Contemporánea, Copenhagen Girls’ Choir, NYNDK Jazz Collective, the Esbjerg Ensemble, Annie Gosfield Band, The Danish Chamber Players, Pace Percussion Trio featuring Thomas Agergaard, The Ensemble Midtvest featuring Henrik Goldschmidt, the Aarhus Sinfonietta a.o.
During the festival, the artists and their audience will have the opportunity to meet each other in the Café Carl at the Teater Republique, where surprising events will take place: A Composers’ Competition, late night cabaret, installation art and much more.
