“Monolith is a blooming new classic”

16.05.12

“The Athelas Sinfonietta lets the sorrowful string music sparkle, as if the musicians were honing their knives on the stone pillars: Monolith is a blooming new classic”.

Thus writes Danish national newspaper’ Information‘s critic Anne Middelboe Christensen, and her enthusiasm for last weeks cooperation between Athelas Chamber Players, choreographer Tim Rushton’s dance company Danish Dance Theatre is shared by Danish paper Berlingske Tidende‘s critic who gives the performance four out of six stars and mentions the performance by Athelas as a “beautiful soundboard for the dance”. Athelas percussionist Mathias Friis-Hansen had composed the music for the choreography “The End of Loneliness” which he performed live on stage, and Berlingske Tidende and newspaper Jyllandsposten alike praise the musician’s original work, calling it “intense”, and a “strong and captivating” piece for percussion.

Even if you were unable to attend Monolith at the Royal Danish Theatre, you still have a chance to experience the cooperation between Athelas and Danish Dance Theatre: Athelas New Music Festival features the event Cello Chamber Dance on May 23 which includes a special version of Monolith with dance performance, once again, by Rushton’s acclaimed dancers!
