Pernille Sejlund: Reminiscence (2010)

“The work “Reminiscence” by Pernille Sejlund meets the central challenge of the Carl’s Award competition in a very convincing way. T the challenge of the condition that the work in question must be performed by the composer on an instrument that she does not master professionally – was here transformed into a performance characterized by a surplus of creativity and expressiveness. Rather than choosing an existing instrument that Sejlund does not play professionally, she chose to construct her own instrument from scratch for “Reminiscence”.

The combined sound of a distorted music box and a glockenspiel was used by Sejlund in a performance full of music and poetic moods. The result was a tight, humorous and subtly innovative work. Sejlund is the winner of the Carl’s Award competition because of the convincing whole of the joyously innovative invention of the instrument and the subtle and poetic work.”
